Coast Guard medevacs woman from Kelleys Island

CLEVELAND — A U.S. Coast Guard boatcrew from Station Marblehead, Ohio, medically evacuated an 85-year-old woman who was suffering severe injuries and possible hypothermia after reportedly falling down on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie.

Search and rescue controllers at Coast Guard Sector Detroit received the request for a medical evacuation at 2:25 p.m.

A flight surgeon, who makes the ultimate determination on what warrants emergency transport, was contacted and briefed and authorized the medevac.

A boatcrew from Station Marblehead launched aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft–Law Enforcement boat.  Once on the island, the boatcrew embarked the woman and emergency medical technician from Kelleys Island. The woman was transferred to awaiting EMS for further transport to Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton, Ohio.

The woman’s name is not being released, and her current condition is unknown.  There is no imagery associated with this case.

Coast Guard rescues 2 from capsized vessel in Panama City Pass

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — The Coast Guard rescued two men from a capsized vessel near Shell Island in Panama City Pass, Friday.

Rescued were David Shaloski and Kenneth Bennett Jr., both of Panama City.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Department relayed a 911 call from Bennett to Coast Guard Station Panama City at 5:50 p.m., reporting that both men required assistance after their 14-foot boat capsized and sank near the East Jetty in Panama City Pass. One of the men was wearing a life jacket, while the other was not.

A Coast Guard Station Panama City 25-foot Response Boat-Small and crew recovered and transported both men to awaiting EMS at St. Andrews Marina.

“They were in roughly waist-deep water, and fortunately, the tide was a little lower, which allowed our crew to tend a rescue heaving line to bring them aboard safely,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher Turner, Station Panama City 25-footer crewmember. “This rescue demonstrates the importance of wearing a life jacket at all times, especially even in shallow water, since an incident can occur at any time with little or no time to locate one.”

EMS treated both men at the scene, but they declined further medical attention.

Their conditions are unknown.

Coast Guard medevacs man from cruise ship off Galveston coast

HOUSTON — A Coast Guard helicopter crew medevaced an injured man from a cruise ship 120 miles off the coast of Galveston, Thursday evening.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received a report at approximately 10 p.m., that a 73-year-old man aboard the Carnival Triumph, an 893-foot cruise ship, had a blood clot in his foot and needed an immediate medevac.

An MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter and crew were launched from Coast Guard Air Station Houston at approximately 11:40 p.m. The crew successfully hoisted the man off the Carnival Triumph and transported him to awaiting emergency medical services at University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston.

“Due to great training and preparation by command center watchstanders and air station personnel, the Coast Guard was able to quickly respond to this medevac, despite the distance offshore,” said Lt. Laura Salemme, command duty officer for Sector Houston-Galveston.

The man’s condition is unknown.
